In Praise Of the 728 x 90 Banner
My favourite banner size is 728 x 90, but I can't help feeling that this generous sized creative is often overlooked by some merchants, who instead prefer to pump out loads of 468 x 60 ads.
I used to have very low expectations of banners anyway, having read about the "banner blindness" effect, and mostly liked them just to make my pages look "pretty" and instead looked to links within the body of my text to really convert, but I have noticed recently some really strong performing banners, and in my case, they have been 728 x 90. I'm not suggesting they convert better than other sizes, but I try to use them where possible and have found them to exceed my low expectations.
When designing a page layout, the best advice is usually to go for a fluid design and I understand the arguments for it. But sometimes I do prefer to do a nice tight fixed width design, and as I would design for a minimum resolution of 800 x 600 still, chopping off for a bit for window borders and margins, 728 x 90 is the perfect size to occupy a prominent space running right across the page.
So, the point is, I'm a big fan of these sized banners and I do think that those merchants who don't offer any creative at all in this size are being a bit shortsighted.

Sorry to be ignorant but why do they say a fluid layout is best? I've never heard that before. Thanks
Pink - A fluid layout is usually preferred as it adapts to different browser sizes. So someone who uses a 800x600 browser can see the page in it's entirety and so can a 1024x768 browser. A fixed layout means that no matter what size the browser is, the site will stay at the same width (e.g. 750px).
I prefer fixed layouts an usually design for 800x600 but am now moving to 1024x768 as more and more people leave the old 15 inch monitors in favour of 17 inches plus. I am currently working on a fluid site but that's a rarity for me!
Rob - I'll join you in a rally for more 768x90px ads! The problem at the moment is that only a handful design for this size which means any banner rotation has to encompass 468x60 banners too :-(

Hi Pink - as David rightly says, a fluid design adapts to different browser sizes. The argument goes that as increasing numbers of people access the web from different devices - PCs, games consoles, PDAs, phones etc - there's no point sticking to a rigid design which degrades on anything other the same resolution you design it for. Evangelists for fluid designs will you need to understand that the web isn't print and your audience won't view the page as exactly as you see it very often so just design in a way which shows everything in a logical, orderly way on any device. I actually agree with the arguments, I just prefer to used fixed designs (at the moment!) :-0
Thanks for your support Dave! ;-) Merchants who support this size get preferential treatment from me for sure.
