Jumping Through Hoops for Affiliate Window

Affiliate Window have posted a reminder on their blog that you should head over to their site at 3pm on Christmas day to claim a free present, if you have been collecting the "coins" in the run up to Xmas. There are 450 presents available, and 1200 affiliates who have collected coins. I forgot one week and have 7 coins collected.

Now, who wouldn't want a free gift at Christmas, and who knows what it might be. The gifts could be something totally cool, or they may not. But am I alone in thinking it's actually a little bit distasteful to promote some mad scramble for gifts between affiliates on what really should be a family day and a day away from all this.

Many affiliates have worked hard all year. There's a reasonable chance that affiliates will be relaxing with their families at 3pm on Christmas day, having perhaps just enjoyed their dinner or about to have it. Many will welcome the opportunity to get away from the family for five minutes no doubt, but others just won't be in a position to go logging onto Affiliate Window's website - and why should they.

I don't want to be churlish about it, and maybe I should just be a little more grateful, like Tiny Tim perhaps. It's a really nice idea to give Christmas presents to affiliates, and how they choose to do it is their call, but I just don't get the thinking behind attempting to disrupt what should really just be a day off for everyone. Personally I won't be near a computer, and may try and get on from my mobile phone, but the very idea behind the timing leaves a sour taste in my mouth - and that's usually a job best left to brussel sprouts on Christmas day.

I totally agree. I collected just one coin then thought forget that for a game of soldiers, I've got better things to do than play naff games.

I'm sorry you saw the promotion as distasteful. We ran it to help merchants engage affiliates with their various offers and promotions in the run up to Christmas and thought it might be fun on Christmas Day to collect a gift from our virtual tree. We didn't think people might consider it 'work' to do this.

This was in no way some evil attempt to pull people away from their families on Christmas Day. There is no ulterior motive here.

In any case, the promotion is not compulsory so I would urge anyone who deems it in bad taste to keep away. On behalf of the network, I apologise for any ill feeling caused.

I love the idea of present giving but I think it would have been better if affiliates had their presents delivered before Christmas, rather than the draw taking place on Christmas Day.

I'm not sure what the presents are but I assume they are to be posted! They could be free cash in your account, in which case that could be deposited on Christmas day I suppose.

The idea of spending all the time working on affiliate sites, then having to log in on Christmas day (of all days) to do even more work seems a bit odd.

For the record, I'm not an AW affiliate but just voicing my opinion. If I were, I wouldn't be logging in on Christmas Day.

Hi Adam... Thanks for your reply. I don't think it's evil, nor do I think there's an ulterior motive. And I'm aware it's not compulsory and I don't consider it work either (wow, lots of straw men in there).

How you run it is entirely your business. I just don't understand the thinking behind creating a time-pressured giveaway slap bang in the middle of Christmas day when a lot of people are busy with their family.

i heard a rumour their next giveaway is for affiliates who log in at 1 second past midnight new years eve / new years day

(joke!)

There was no complex thought pattern behind it. We just thought it might be a bit of fun on Christmas day.

We will take your feedback on board.

I would like to chat with you about the advertisement at your blog, but i can't find your email. Please send to my email: vishtak (at) gmail.com the price of the review.

Depending on you in-laws I guess. Logging into Affiliate Window with the chance of a goody with another visit from Father Christmas, or having to visit the in-laws for another pair of tacky reindeer socks which will find their way to the charity shop on boxing day.

I have no idea how elaborate or cheesy the gifts might be, as long as it's not a mouse mat or usb memory stick, which we giveaway to the school as the drawer is over-flowing.

Whichever way it's still very nice of them to do it, as long as I don't receive a lump of coal.

Have a merry christmas & a healthy & successful 2008

lol, yes, very true - depending on your inlaws, a visit to the computer will either be a welcome break or an unwelcome distraction.

Thanks - merry christmas to you and yours too.

Thanks also to funky monkey, david and anon too for your perspectives!
